Jan Oliehoek: Photo Manipulation

May 29, 2012 By Wendy Campbell

A little weird, a little creepy, a little beautiful.  These are the photo manipulations of Jan Oliehoek. Based in Leiden, Netherlands, Oliehoek has a Masters degree in Biology, works as an IT specialist, for a biopharmaceutical company, and creates his surreal hybrids as a hobby.

“I try to create images that are both photorealistic and impossible at the same time. There are countless ways to accomplish this, and combining several animals into one hybrid is one of them. On top of that, I find that some animals just look amazing and beautiful. If on top of that they are then photographed by a really good photographer, I am already more than half way in creating a cool image without even having touched it yet.”

Sarolta Ban: Photo Manipulation 2011

September 30, 2011 By Wendy Campbell

A selection of recent work from DAF favourite Sarolta Ban (featured).  Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1982, Ban was originally a jewellery designer before discovering digital photo manipulation. Using a Fuji S5600 Bridge Camera, Sarolta’s images can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete, containing up to 100 layers.

“I like using ordinary elements and by combining them, I can give them various stories and personalities. I hope that the meanings of my pictures are never too limited, are open in some way so that each viewer can transform them into a personal aspect.  “

Ban is currently working on publishing a book of her images and has been helping to open a photo gallery in Budapest.  To see more, visit SaroltaBan.com or check out her photostream on Flickr.

Oleg Dou: Photography/Photo Manipulation

July 26, 2011 By Wendy Campbell

Russian photographer Oleg Dou is exhibiting his new series entitled “Cubs” at Senda Gallery) in Barcelona, Spain. The Cubs series features portraits of children with a “grim perfection, pale complexion and lifeless look.”

Inspired at first by the tradition of child funeral portraits practiced in the 19th century, Dou confides that the series also stems from an unhappy childhood memory when he was forced to wear  white rabbit costume (made by his mother) to a party. The little Oleg felt terrible and burst into tears when he had to smile for the camera. “I couldn’t pretend being happy in front of the camera, I hated being photographed. The image finally reflected my discomfort and my vexation. It’s still often the case today. I try to recreate the expression of this embarrassment in my portraits, but this time, I provoke it. For the ‘Cubs’ series, all the costumes were tailored by my mother, based on my sketches.”

Oleg Dou is representative of a new generation of Russian artists. Fascinated by human faces and inspired both by classical painting and fashion photography, Dou explores the maximum of plastic qualities of the medium. According to him, he doesn’t spread any social or political message. Combining shooting and digital retouch, Dou’s photographs push the aesthetic to the margin of strangeness.  “I’m interested in the human being, his face, his expressions. I enjoy playing with the visitor’s perception. That’s why photography is my favorite discipline: it can create this thin border between reality and beyond. Embellishing my models is not a goal in itself, but it’s the instrument with whom “I catch” the visitor. It’s narrative material”. (from Senda Gallery)
