Steampunk Art: PBS Arts Off Book

February 18, 2012 By Wendy Campbell

Steampunk in the arts – Check out this interesting video from PBS Arts Off Book. “Steampunk art evokes an alternate reality where steam is the primary source of power. Technology, though highly advanced, has taken on a very different look and feel, and fashion is heavily influenced by Victorian styles.”

Featuring Joey Marsocci aka Dr Grymm, Third Rail Projects, Composer David Bruce, and the Ensemble ACJW.

Michihiro Matsuoka: Childhood Dreams @ Artishox Gallery

October 15, 2011 By Wendy Campbell

DAF favourite Michihiro Matsuoka is having his first European exhibition entitled “Childhood Dreams” at Artishox Gallery in Hasselt, Belgium.

“Born in 1969, living and working in Ichinomiya-shi, Aichi, Japan. Matsuoka finds inspiration from his childhood memories and deteriorated toys and devices out of that period. He urges the viewer a kind of nostalgic feeling with the ´worn-out´ sculptures that are a blend of various animals, fish, boats, vehicles and machinery. Matsouka primarily uses industrial resin clay and other materials for his work. The sculptures are meticulously finished with acrylic paint, which aids his desire to express the progression of time.”

“Childhood Deams” runs through November 27, 2011.  For more information, visit MichihiroMatsuoka.com or Artishox.com. You can also see photos from the exhibition on Artishox’s Facebook Page.

Note: The images below are examples of Matsuoka’s recent work. Contact Artishox Gallery for available pieces.

Michihiro Matsuoka: Sculpture

March 27, 2011 By Wendy Campbell

More great work from Japanese sculptor Michihiro Matsouka. Matsouka finds inspiration from his childhood memories and deteriorated devices. Creating worn out devices that fuse animals and fish with machinery, Matsouka primarily uses stone clay for his work, but will incorporate other materials that seem to be suitable. The sculptures are meticulously finished with acrylic paint, which aids his desire to express the progression of time.”

Pierre Matter: Sculpture

September 28, 2010 By Wendy Campbell

French sculptor Pierre Matter was born in 1964.  “A mystical child, then a tormented teenager, he studied mathematics half-heartedly. It was only logical that he headed naturally, though initially in an erratic manner, for the mysterious universe of artistic creation. His slow progression in this field led him to try out many kinds of expression and material, from oil to gouache to ink, from comic strips to canvas, and also bas-relief in stone.”

To create his sculptures, Matter diverts many industrial objects from their initial use, from car spare parts to electronic components, salvage scrap metal and sluice gates. “… in so far as I create my works out of derelict objects because they have become useless or ineffectual, scrap metal which will live a new life in my sculptures, will survive to deterioration and become the privileged witness of a materialistic time of accelerated wasting.   I am strongly influenced by the “anticipation” and “prospective” spheres, from Giger to Jodorowsky, and Jules Verne. Materialism is cracking all over, we are changing world, the present and the future are merging more and more, everything is becoming fluid and our landmarks are getting blurred.”

Matter’s work depicts how technology has invaded every part of our existence. “The blending of man with machine (cyborg, cyber organisms) seems already taken for granted. Until now, we have managed to evolve at the same rate as technological innovation: the rhythm of the 19th and 20th centuries was slow enough to allow man time to adapt. However, in the last few decades the acceleration of discovery became  exponential. Biomechanic, biotechnology,  hybridation, clone, roboters are  now banal and common concepts. Along with the advent of computers, networks and interconnection, it  has become very noticeable, and to such an extent that we feel more and more often out of our depth. My artistic work fits into this disruptive era, when all the limits are constantly being called into question by technology and science. It’s a modest attempt to apprehend by means of concrete shapes the effects of the uncontrolled acceleration of change on our lives and our planet.”

Matter is represented around the world by Opera Gallery.  To see more of these fascinating works, visit PierreMatter.fr.

Stephane Halleux: Sculpture

January 5, 2010 By Wendy Campbell

Beauty-Machine-Stephane Hallelux

Knowing my affinity for Steampunk, fellow artist and blogger Esther Barend,  brought  the creations of Belgian sculptor Sephane Halleux  to my attention a little while ago, and I am happy to share his works today.

Halleux studied illustration at Saint Luc in Liege, Belgium from 1992-1995 and began a career at an animation film studio in Luxemburg, first as a colorist, and then as a layout artist. After seven years, he became frustrated by the lack of creativity and industrialization of animation, and left to work in a “bank-sale” furniture company where his passion for “old treasures” emerged.

His first exhibitions in 2005 were a great success and since that time, Halleux has been able pursue sculpting full-time.

Daniel Proulx: Wearable Steampunk Art

September 23, 2009 By Wendy Campbell

daniel-proulx-steampunk-ring daniel-proulx daniel-proulx-steampunk-bracelet

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, jewelry designer Daniel Proulx makes unique wire-wrapped Steampunk Jewelry and sculptures from brass, copper and gemstones.

Proulx previously worked in the travel industry and in finance. However, one day in 2008, after his “better half” had learned to make simple wire rings, he gave it a try himself and now works full time at his craft. His creations are inspired by his long-time interest in fantasy worlds, science fiction,  the mix of mechanical and organic shapes, and the contrast between ancient and futuristic designs.

To see more of Proulx’s creations, visit his profile on Deviant Art, his Blogspot page, or his Etsy shop to purchase these  extraordinary works of wearable art.
